Colleagues of the Ponferrada and A Medua offices visit CUPA PIZARRAS quarries

If you ask a child to draw a mine, he or she will probably draw a narrow, winding place. However, slate quarries are different. Covered slate mines have vaulted ceilings as if they were huge cathedrals and opencast ones have impressive sizes, bigger than a football stadium. Some of our colleagues at the Ponferrada and A Medua offices saw this for themselves on their visit to our company’s place of origin.

In addition to the striking scenario, they had the chance to see first-hand how the people in charge of slate extraction and processing work. Their professionalism and the care with which they handle the raw material make our slate a high-quality product. Thanks to all of them, today we can affirm that one of every slate installed in the world bears our brand.

Technology and Tradition

The visit started at Riodolas mine, in Carballeda de Valdeorras (Ourense), an impressive place for its 35 metre-high and 100 metre-long vaulted galleries. It continued at Las Arcas (San Pedro de Trones, León), the largest open-cast slate quarry in the world. At both, they were surprised by the size of the cutting-edge machinery used every day by our colleagues.
